As Russia deploys an increasing number of faster, jet-powered versions of its Shahed attack drones, defense manufacturers are accelerating the development of a new generation of high-speed interceptor drones. Among them is SkyFall, one of Ukraine's largest drone manufacturers, which unveiled a new high-speed interceptor on Monday at Britain's Farnborough International Airshow—one of the world's premier aerospace events—designed specifically to counter this emerging aerial threat.
SkyFall's new Jetkiller
The new aircraft, named the P1-SUN Jetkiller, is a faster variant of the company's existing interceptor drone, which has been operationally deployed across Ukraine since late last year. Unmanned systems form a central pillar of this year's airshow, as conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East highlight the severe operational limits of legacy air defense systems when confronting mass-produced, low-cost aerial threats. European missile manufacturer MBDA is launching a new interceptor system designed to counter swarm attacks from cheap loitering munitions, while Lockheed Martin announced a lower-cost interceptor variant for its Patriot system on Monday.
Jet-powered Shaheds change the battlefield equation
Low-cost, long-range Shahed drones of Iranian design have evolved into one of the most critical security threats facing Ukraine, with Russia launching thousands of units every month. Moscow has modified these designs—which it designates as Geran—by integrating turbojet engines to enable deeper penetrations into Ukrainian territory, including the capital city of Kyiv. The updated variants can attain speeds reaching 500 km/h, drastically reducing the warning time Ukraine has to detect targets and scramble counter-interception assets. This speed envelope comfortably exceeds the performance capabilities of most operational interceptor drones.
SkyFall promises mass production by August
According to SkyFall, the upgraded P1-SUN Jetkiller can reach top speeds of 370 km/h, compared to approximately 310 km/h for the previous iteration. A company representative told Reuters that engineering work on the new model began roughly three months ago, underwent extensive battlefield testing, and has successfully shot down over a dozen jet-powered Shaheds. The firm plans to initiate full-scale mass production in August. The base P1-SUN model has intercepted more than 5,500 Shaheds since entering operational service in November 2025, according to the manufacturer, which claims an active manufacturing capacity of 50,000 units per month. Reuters noted that it was unable to independently verify these operational claims from the front lines.
More Russian drones receive jet propulsion
The operational deployment of jet-propelled Shaheds by Russian forces has expanded significantly over recent months, according to military experts. As reported by Reuters in April, approximately 15% to 20% of the Shaheds currently fielded by Russia are equipped with jet engines rather than conventional propeller engines, according to senior Ukrainian Air Force commander Yuriy Cherevashenko.
Ukrainian defense firms race to build faster interceptors
Ukrainian defense contractor General Cherry is similarly engineering a faster variant of its Bullet interceptor, engineered explicitly to engage jet-powered Shahed platforms. Company representative Marko Kushnir stated that the upgraded system is in its final development stage, already capable of exceeding 400 km/h, with a design benchmark aimed at hitting 500 km/h. A primary engineering focus remains the selection of the optimal propulsion system, with engineers currently evaluating both high-output electric motors and compact turbojet engines. The firm aims to conduct initial front-line combat trials in early August, targeting full mass production by September.
The ultimate challenge remains unit cost
Marko Kushnir emphasized that the primary engineering challenge involves strict cost containment, ensuring the new iteration maintains a price point close to the current Bullet, which costs roughly $2,000 dollars or less per unit. According to company figures, existing Bullet platforms have downed more than 1,000 conventional Russian Shaheds since November of last year.
British-Ukrainian partnership targets new jet interceptor
Joining the effort to field solutions against high-speed Shahed threats, British-Ukrainian firm Firebolt Engineering announced the development of a jet-powered interceptor drone. Named the Griffen, the platform can reach speeds of up to 350 km/h, according to chief executive officer Mykola, who requested to be identified only by his first name due to security considerations. The platform logged its first successful combat interception of a Russian Shahed in May—engaging a standard propeller variant—while the company works to scale up its production line. Concurrently, Firebolt is collaborating with British firm Dynamic Propulsion to develop a new engine intended to raise the Griffen's top speed to roughly 400 km/h.
Dynamic Propulsion CEO Gus Gingel stressed that controlling unit costs represents the decisive factor in drone warfare. "We must find the right compromise in materials to produce an attritable system rather than an overly expensive one," he stated. According to Tomasz Wozniak, a partner at defense technology venture firm Grenadyr—which funds both Firebolt Engineering and Dynamic Propulsion—the unit cost for a jet-powered interceptor for Ukraine stands at under $10,000 dollars, making it several times more expensive than current non-jet interceptor drones.
